ok can someone please clarify the DANA axles for me, what does the number signify and why is it so important, or rather, what is it good for? anybody know how to improve an independent suspension?
never mind...i realized i already asked, but further clarification would help, is there just an easy definition?

dana 30 light duty, dana 35 PILE!!, dana 44 decent axle main axle most guys run or would like to run, dana 60 bad boy axle usally a full floting axle, dana 70 over KIll no point just get portals instead...this is my 2 cents....1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton as listed...not sure if calmini or some one makes like a total choas suspension for ur rig but other then that SAS it dont waste time and lots of money on ifs...

front 44s? i have yet to see one...I have seen semi floating..

I've only seen semi-floating 44's.
Basically, in Landonese, the bigger the number the more beefy the axle.
There are lots of other variations based on manufacturer usage, i.e. manual hubs vs. auto hubs vs. no hubs - axle shafts always engaged
Think about it this way... My volvo has a dana 30 rear end. Harvey upgraded to a semi-floating D44 for his rear. His can handle more power and abuse than my Volvo :)
83, does the size of the ring gear change? Or does the carrier just get more beefy?
And did they ever make a narrow Dana 60?
Found the answer to my question. Yes, they did increase the ring gear size between models...

Landon, I can tell you from experience that if my IFS wasn't destroyed, I wouldn't even consider a SFAC. But right now it's either do the conversion or find a new truck.

I want to see the monstrosity before I commit. If you'll be around this weekend, I could swing down and check it out.

Combine that with getting beers with Chris and we've got a plan.

It all depends on what you consider narrow. Oh wait, no it doesn't. The Dana 50 and 60's are one size only. The only difference between a front Dana 60 for a dual wheel'd truck is that it has wheel spacers on the front to account for the wider rear end. As said before, if you want a narrow axle, do it yourself. It's really not that hard either. Simply tear the axle down, cut down the axle tube, and have your axle shafts shortened to the new appropriate width.
I wouldn't SAS your Monty unless you were looking for doing some serious wheeling. However, if all you do is 20% wheeling and it's not even all that hard because you can't be without a daily driver, then I would say stay away from the SAS.
If you want to lift the Monty, it's pretty easy from what I found. Jack you torsion bars up in the front, and if you have the 4 cyl. just get add a leafs, or longer shackles for the rear and you should get 2" of lift for under $100. However, if you have the 6 cylinder, you need to run different coils in the rear to get you lift.

He's got the beasty v6 in there.... so new coils will be required. And Lando, tires (fear of popping them) should be all that is holding you back from wheeling it right now! Well, that and smog. I wheeled the piss out of my truck on 30" A/T's.

True...... If only the poor monty knew what it could do on a trail...
:)
Sorry Landon, you just need to get it out wheeling. We need to do a hollister run sometime after I get my SFAC done. Monterey isn't very far at all from HHOHV.
