View Full Version : 4runner Bumper

hey folks, I liked the 4runner bumpers sooo much that i decided to get one! I have th double tube with tow hitch... as far as lining up with the frame = perfection, the problem is that is sticks out like a mother and the crossbeams for the tow hitch can't occupy the same space as the fuel cell due to some physiological theory...I've seen them perform pretty well off road so I thought that might be a good start to the transformation..I wanna keep the tow hitch... but any thoughts on how to make it work?

Why?!?!?

i was there and it was cheap...jk...tow hitch, other various small reasons, it should do better than the bumper i have now, im just working...slowly but surely, i hate regretting stuff, so just go with it..of all the people that criticize me, please..i don't need one more..I think it was a good move on my part, it is all part of a bigger plan that i have yet to have funding for...all 4 wheelers should know that..harvey put urs on his front..why did he do that? (actually asking..a point could be made but i need an answer first)

Nope, I'm criticizing.
Have you ever looked at the structure behind the 'bumper' you currently have? Your rear tow point/hitch mount is your bumper. The little thin metal thing covering it is all for show. That tow point is one of the strongest things on your car. The metal facade is not, as your step dad proved.
Chop up the Shittybuilt.... I mean Smittybuilt..... you just bought and build a front bumper from it maybe?
Harvey had a little thin front bumper with no built in support like your rear has.... and my old front smittybuilt fit on his jeep, but it's not the right way to do it. He spent about $5 on washers to get it to fit, and it rubs on his tires.

good call on the front bumper, but i don't catch ur drift on the facade...which part is that?

The bumper "cover".... The shiny metal part with the flat 'step' part on it. That is not really your bumper. The Monty's have a sub-bumper that the hitch/recovery point is attached to. That is a super beefy part of your truck that I would leave well alone. Just find the bolt on hitch and attach it to the recovery point. Post up some pics so others can see what we are talking about.
And just to clear something up for ya.... those tube bumpers aren't "4runner bumpers" they are off-the-shelf bulk built smittybuilt bumpers, keep your eyes open and you will see them on anything and everything.

yeah, i noticed the sub-bumper you are talking about, the part that the hook/loop is attached to..and they do make tow hitch attachments for them, thing is..when I went up to Rancho Cordova last weekend, they didn't have the montero I was looking for that had all of the stuff on it...if the smittybuilt bumpers are aftermarket...why do they suck apparently?
jokeplayer
12-17-2007, 09:59 PM
Since when did aftermarket = better than stock?!
Smittybuilts = 'I got in an accident and can't afford a stock replacement', or = 'i'm a mall crawler, check out how hardcore my truck looks.' Mine is crumpling every time I hit it on something... and it hangs SOOoooo low. It's junk.
And why not wait until you could find a stock (meaning better) hitch? They tuck up nice and tight and just bolt on. So easy. I just checked ebay, but didn't find one for ya.

Although I didn't check for a Pajaro hitch..... you might want to look into that.

My rear bumper? Someday. I'm waiting for AJ at BentUp to email or call me back.... he hasn't been returning either. I want one of his rear swing out tire carriers.... but if he won't return my calls or emails then that sucks cause he doesn't get my business and I don't get one of his beautiful bumpers. I want to use some bday monies and get it around february.

so...i measured the mounts...the mounts for the stock front bumper are 24 inches apart...and the mounts for the shitty..smittybuilt sit...ready...42 inches apart...looks like i'm gonna have to weld some new brackets (as expected) i think this bumper could be good tho...maybe mount a winch eventually?

...means you should ditch this idea before someone gets hurt landon.

that was quite a response for sarcasm...my friend suggested it...i was hesitant.. *maybe one of those little ATV hitches from harbor freight!* same idea...is it the welding that is the bad idea or the winch, i would get a REAL bumper w/ winch b4 i start getting in too deep

Don't even play that card.
Landon, look into an ARB or a custom front bumper. Find a custom rear bumper.
Again, a Monty/Pajaro forum is gonna be full of good info.... this forum is just us making assumptions about a vehicle we don't own. Hence why I recommended a Monty forum. And my friend, you would get flamed so hard for suggesting such things at other forums.

they don't have any good off road monty forums...which should tell me something...the only forums i found were people whining about noises their monteros were making and how to unlock their radios after the battery died

wait, was that a joke? blonde moment...ps, i never really liked the ARB bumpers, they all seem too generic, but i may have to settle considering my options
UKMyers
12-18-2007, 07:11 PM
ARB bumpers are far from generic.. I had mine custom built on a winch plate for 300 bucks.

UKMyers

AJ is a master with metal. Unfortunately there is a lot less out there for your application but custom shops will do anything for you.
