View Full Version : Cooling System Questions

Here's the deal:

1990 Jeep Ch. 6 cylinder inline engine.

What it's doing: dying at stop lights/signs, boiling over when driving, over heating (in 15 degree weather), and not blowing any heat through the heating system either.

The radiator reservoir is full, 50/50 mix, but doesn't seem to be circulating to keep the engine cool. Nothing's pointing to a blown head gasket, i.e. oil looks normal, everything sounds normal, and it's running normal, except on longer excursions (more than 3 miles one way... Hey I live in a tiny ass town, and don't go very far).

My questions are: What parts should I look at replacing? Is there anything else that needs to be checked? Is it a possibility that the (my mind is gone completely blank at the moment) part that regulates the gas to the engine is frozen open, therefore flooding the engine as well?

Since you mentioned non-circulation... Have you checked the thermostat for proper operation? Replacements are cheap.

Has the cooling system been flushed within the last 30,000 miles? Within the last 60,000 miles? Could be a blockage somewhere.

We haven't driven it 30,000 miles, but it hasn't been flushed since we bought it about a year ago. The plan is to do without wheels and take it to the mechanic (I'm not supposed to work on it in my driveway, never mind the 0 degree weather right now) and have it flushed etc. I know it will drive across two streets to the mechanic. That's a good suggestion, and I was thinking that myself.

Could have a stuck tstat, also the heater core could be plugged. Why cant you work on it? HOA?

sounds like 2 diff. problems happening at once. I would check the tstat first. As far as dieing the cold weather an elevation could have alot to do with that. ( just threw a code in my durango do to cold weather the vss didnt like me spining tires.) weather puts a huge strain on rigs...

Why cant you work on it? HOA? lack of tools mostly... and i like my fingers alive, as opposed to frostbit. And the h20 is turned off to the outside faucet.

I would say it's a t-stat that your having problems with. Replace it with a new one, they only cost a couple of bucks and can normally be replaced with just a screw driver. Next, what type of car is this? It's hard guessing what the stalling problems are without knowing what motor your talking about.
